What is in the name of a medical practice?
As you would expect, when we opened Access MD a few years ago we considered a few different business names.
We decided on the name “Access MD” to differentiate this practice from traditional primary care practices as to how easy it was to communicate with us on both short term health issues and long term needs.
You probably already know this but here are a few benefits which Access MD offers to its patients:
Same day or next day appointments
Access to me through my own personal cell phone number.
Annual exams
A small practice size
We are able to continue to offer these benefits in spite of our practice gaining more acceptance each month from the Mobile community.
Please know we welcome all communication with you in whatever form it takes, as this leads to a healthier and more productive “you”.
This isn’t a health care related blog post but we thought you would still find it of interest…..
The Mobile Run Down is a great site to bookmark to keep track of events occurring here in Mobile. We counted about 20 events listed for this week in Mobile. The site has an email list you can join as well.
It’s great to see community resources being created for our city and region.
The health benefits to regular exercise are very substantial. With the summer months approaching and the high temperatures we experience here in Mobile during those summer months, it never hurts to remind ourselves of some basic rules about how to exercise properly in those conditions.
This is a short article from US News and World Report on four precautions to take when exercising during the hotter months. Those four precaution are: protecting yourself from the heat and sun, exercising during the right times of the day, drinking lots of water, and knowing your limits.
Access MD is proud of our affiliation with the Springhill Medical Center. On Wednesday, April 22, it is sponsoring an Earth Day Mobile celebration.
It is free to the public, and starts at 10:30 AM and runs to 2:00 PM. Earth Day Mobile will be on the campus of Springhill Medical Center at 3719 Dauphin Street. Gulf Coast Produce will be having an on-site farmers market, and there will be over a dozen exhibitors.
Please stop by if you have time – it looks like this is an event which could grow annually.
Last month we reminded everyone that Access MD offers travel medicine to all its patients. This means that we hope you come in and see us for any health care or vaccine information you may need for an upcoming trip.
Since summer is almost upon us last month’s information was well received. This month, we also want to mention that the CDC website has great information for you as you make your travel plans. It includes data on current health care issues around the world, and is kept up-to-date with the latest news. It is well worth the “bookmark” for those traveling abroad during the summer months.
One of our core philosophies here at Access MD is that proper health care includes a planning process as a major ingredient for success.
Certainly, emergencies and unexpected developments occur with all of us, and Access MD is available for those situations.
But for the long term, health care should be about planning for what we know will be occurring in upcoming stages later in our lives and the lives of family members.
Because of this, we work with our patients when they first join the practice to understand what aging stage they are currently in, and how to prepare for later stages. Then, through annual visits and regular communication, we modify those plans as time moves forward.
Toward that end, let me share two web resources with you:
1. National Healthcare Decision Day is an annual, one-day event which focuses attention on advancing health care planning for Americans. This year’s NHDD was on Friday of last week, and we applaud their efforts in bringing more publicity to this subject.
2. HealthinAging.org is another website and has a lot of information on issues related to advanced planning for the elderly. This is a wonderful resource for anyone over 50 or for those who have elderly family members.
We hope you know that Access MD is not just a resource for immediate heath care needs but also a continuing resource for healthcare planning for you and your loved ones.
Since most of us drink coffee every morning we thought we would share information on a new study with you.
This Washington Post article suggests coffee is good for overall health. It’s an interesting read, and it is surprising how many health benefits some researchers say coffee provides.
If you like that coffee in the morning, you can now feel better knowing that it might not only pick you up but also be good for you!
We can assist you on making sure you have the right vaccines and health information for the locales you are visiting.Call us for more information or to schedule an appointment for vaccines or that final checkup before leaving.
This article from FamilyDoctor.org offers a few other tips on how to prepare for trips to foreign countries.Safe travels to you and yours during the coming summer months!
As you probably know, the Pertussis virus is very active right now in Mobile.
We do recommend that all parents of school age children consider getting vaccinated and in addition, that they be certain that the people who spend a lot of time around their children are vaccinated as well. Most adults have had vaccinations but over time those vaccinations can lose their effectiveness.
This article from a Florida TV station explains a little more about the wisdom of taking these actions.
Please contact us for vaccine information or if you have any questions on this latest outbreak.
More and more Access MD patients use the Internet to become “prepared patients”. We find this to be a very positive development.
However, it is important to use the best sources of information on the Internet when researching. Discernment is critical when there are no real rules on what health “information” can be posted.
Here are two links we would recommend as reference sites.
One is the Heath News Review website. Health-related stories are reviewed here for completeness and accuracy.
Secondly, the Center for Advancing Health has a list of recommended sites with reliable information.
Please feel free to send us any information you find on the Internet that might be relevant to your health care situation. This would help us address all of your concerns, thereby creating a healthier you, which is what Access MD Concierge Medicine is all about.
