We all know exercise is critical to good health, but the debate rages as to how much exercise and what kind of exercise is best for you. Your age, pre-existing conditions, and other reasons factor into the equation. Having said that, here is one article which states that a moderate amount of jogging either outside of the home or on a treadmill helps lower your risk of death.
A short snippet from the article:
“First, some exercise reduces your risk of death. Second, the optimal walking/jogging exercise is light to moderate jogging. The optimal speed is between 5 and 7 mph, and if you do 25 minutes about three times a week, you’re all set. Nothing in the data suggests that running more – farther, or faster – will do more to lower your risk of death.”

Conversations about health and healthcare usually revolve around what to eat, how much to exercise, healthcare insurance, or maybe new technologies.
But sometimes the most simple solutions to better health are right in front of us. Owning a pet may be one of those solutions, according to many studies.

But you can also count health benefits as a benefit to having a pet. This article from Health.com gives 12 great reasons as to why owning a pet is great for your health. Among the reasons are better fitness, help with depression, and lower blood pressure.

Most of us have pets in our homes. We might do this for enjoyment, or in the case of dogs, for security.
But did you know that animals are also good for your health? Many studies have shown this to be the case, and for reasons you could probably guess.
Here is an article from Fox News on five animals that can make a positive impact on your health.
Here is a clip from the article:
Studies link dog ownership to lower blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, plus a reduced risk of heart disease. A 2011 review in the Journal of physical activity and Health found that dog owners are 34 percent more likely to meet their exercise requirements (based on the federal guidelines) than nonowners.
What are the five animals beside dogs? They are cats, fish, birds, and horses.

It’s always good to see national exposure for concierge medicine. We wanted to pass along this link to a short segment from the 700 Club. The segment interviews a Texas doctor about the advantages of working with a concierge doctor.
Of course, since you are patients of Access MD, you know about the benefits of this form of medicine. Concierge medicine is becoming more popular throughout the country as premiums and deductibles continue to skyrocket.
Every now and then I find through the clutter of the Internet a resource for health and fitness news that proves to be quite valuable. This blog and the tools at its sister site fit that profile.
The Hello Healthy Blog covers all sorts of information related to diet and fitness. New information on a variety of topics is posted daily. On a recent day the blog included postings on how to lower sugar intake, a 20-minute workout video, and a list of reasons as to why running is so good for you.
The Hello Healthy Blog is actually run by myfitnesspal.com. Over 65 million people access this site. It includes an app for your phone to log what you eat and you can count the calories on a daily basis. It also has a “community” arrangement where you can work with other people to lose weight. Studies clearly show that if a person monitors their intake that more weight is lost.
Fitness and health information is more abundant than ever now, but good information is not always easy to find. Using resources like the Hello Healthy Blog to help you achieve your health goals is a form of preventive care.
This article sums up nicely one of the major issues with the current healthcare insurance system. Deductibles are so high that many people forgo needed medical help.
There are different definitions of “underinsured” but it is safe to say that between high deductibles and ever rising premiums the number of people not seeking out the necessary help will continue to rise.
So what is the writer’s solution? One solution is to focus more on preventive care.
Of course, that is what Access MD is all about. Our annual fee continues to become more of a value with each passing year.
